When you can apply to extend
The earliest day is 2 months before the end date. The application is registered when you submit your part, not when the employer starts.
A work permit lasts at most two years. When it is getting close to the end you need an extension if you are going to keep working in Sweden. Here is the date, who submits what, and what had to apply the whole time.
When you can apply
You can apply no earlier than 2 months before the permit expires. You need to apply before it expires.

The calculator counts the two months as calendar months. If the permit expires on 15 January, the earliest day is 15 November. If it expires on 31 August, the earliest day is 30 June, because June has no 31st.
Your part is what counts
The application is registered only once you have filled in and submitted your part. It is not enough that the employer has completed their part.

The employer starts in the online service. When that part is done you get an email with a link. You sign in, check the terms, attach documents and submit. Only then is the application registered. If you wait for “the employer has submitted it”, the date of the new salary requirement can pass.
If you apply after the permit has expired, you may not work while you wait. You may also lose some social benefits, and the application can be refused because you stayed in Sweden without a permit.

What had to be true the whole time
Salary, insurance and the other terms of employment must have been met for the whole time you have held a work permit. They must have been at least in line with a collective agreement or with what is usual in the occupation or industry.

- The salary had to be enough, not only in the month you apply.
- Four insurances had to cover the whole period. Read more in the insurance guide.
- The terms had to be at least in line with a collective agreement or with what is usual in the occupation.
An order
- Look at the expiry date and get the earliest day from the calculator.
- Ask the employer to start the application in good time, and watch for the email with your link.
- Compare the salary with the level that likely applies to your registration.
- Ask for insurance certificates with start dates before you submit your part.
- Submit your part before the permit ends.
The Swedish Migration Agency fee is SEK 2,200 for an employee, SEK 1,500 for an adult family member and SEK 750 for a child.
