Insurance and paperwork
Sickness, life, work-injury and occupational pension insurance had to cover the whole permit. Here is what to ask your employer for.
The salary shows on the payslips. The insurance does not always show there. A gap at the start of the permit can still exist. Take this list to your employer.
Four insurances, the whole time
To extend the permit, you must have been covered by sickness insurance, life insurance, work-injury insurance (TFA) and occupational pension insurance for the whole time you have held the permit.

- Sickness insurance. It pays if you become ill. It is not the same as private medical insurance that buys faster care.
- Life insurance. It pays if you die.
- Work-injury insurance, often called TFA. It covers injury at work or on the way to work.
- Occupational pension insurance. The employer takes it out or pays for it.
From 1 June 2026, someone who will stay in Sweden for less than a year must also have, or have applied for, comprehensive health insurance for the whole stay. It must cover emergency and other medical care, hospital care, emergency dental care and medical repatriation.

The Swedish National Audit Office has described that a gap in insurance during the earlier permit can lead to an extension being refused.
This sentence comes from a research brief pointing at section 3.1.6. Read that section of the report before you treat it as settled.

Ask the employer for this
- Which company holds each insurance, and your policy number if there is one.
- The start date. What matters is that cover began no later than the permit, and that it has not had a gap.
- A certificate you can attach, not only a spoken “we have a collective agreement”.
- The employment contract, signed, with salary, hours and what applies to overtime.
Papers to gather
The extension asks for, among other things, your passport, employment contract, the insurance company and the period the policies cover, payslips for the current year, income statements from the Swedish Tax Agency for every year you have worked in Sweden, and employment certificates.

If you changed employer during the permit, you need certificates for each job, not only the current one. The source is the document list above. Your passport needs to be valid. The permit cannot run longer than the passport.
The list follows what the Swedish Migration Agency asks for on its page. Your case may need more papers, for example if you are also applying for a permanent residence permit.
